National Parrothead Day is celebrated on June 28th each year. The term "Parrothead" was coined by Timothy B. Schmit, a former member of Jimmy Buffett's Coral Reefer Band, during a concert in Cincinnati on June 28, 1985. The term refers to fans of Jimmy Buffett and his music, who often embrace a laid-back, tropical lifestyle.

Although born in Cuba, the exact origin of the Mojito remains under debate with roots as early as 1586. A variety of recipes add fruit to the Mojito for unique summer combinations. The already refreshing beverage lends itself to being mixed in large pitchers for serving a crowd or individual drinks for one or two people. Mixes also offer the simplicity of just adding rum. However, fresh, simple ingredients bring out the best flavor of a Mojito. |

Daiquiri is a family of cocktails whose main ingredients are rum, citrus juice (typically lime), and sugar. Tasting of sunshine and beaches, it might be hard to believe how the Daiquiri came to be. Back in 1898, men blasted away in the mines of a small community off the coast of Cuba during the Spanish-American War. One American engineer, Jennings Cox, supervised a mining operation located in a village named Daiquiri. Every day after work, Cox and his employees would gather at the Venus bar. Then one day, Cox mixed up Bacardi, lime, and sugar in a tall glass of ice. He named the new beverage after the Daiquiri mines, and the drink soon became a staple in Havana. Eventually, someone added shaved ice, and sometimes lemons or both lemons and limes were used. |

Rum is the third most popular spirit in the United States. Only vodka and all the whiskeys combined beat it for first and second-rankings. The spirit finds its way into citrusy mixed drinks, and cool blended summer cocktails. So much so, that rum stirs up images of sandy beaches and brightly colored umbrellas in fruity drinks. However, rum also conjures up sailors and pirates. The reason for that is how rum came to be. In the West Indies during the 1600s, large plantations grew sugar cane. When they extracted the sugar, they created a by-product called molasses. For years, the molasses was a waste product until it was discovered it could be distilled - into rum. Then, rum became not only a commodity for trade but also a ration on the ships delivering the product. Even in the modern Royal Navy, British sailors received an allotment of rum until 1970.

There are many theories to the beginning of the cheeseburger dating back to the 1920s. One story suggests that Lionel Sternberger invented the cheeseburger in 1926 while working at his father’s Pasadena, California sandwich shop, The Rite Spot. During an experiment, he dropped a slice of American cheese on a sizzling hamburger.
